The real surprise is actress Jennifer Grey ( Dirty Dancing ), who voices a fictionalized version of herself as Johnny's co-star and also provides the voice for the demon Sareena. The voice cast is rounded out by a group of talented actors reprising their roles, including Robin Atkin Downes as Shinnok, Kelly Hu as Ashrah, and Zehra Fazal as Jataaka. Perhaps the most memorable performance comes from the late Gilbert Gottfried as David Doubldy, whose unmistakable voice delivers some of the film's funniest and most profane moments in one of his final roles. The film’s biggest surprise is a fight against a mutated stuntman who can stretch his limbs like Elastigirl on PCP. Jax uses grapple moves and a steel pipe to break every joint in the creature’s body. It ends with a "Leg Rip" fatality—a callback to the original 1992 game’s infamous glitch.
To be fair, if you want a straight adaptation of the Mortal Kombat 1 or 2 game storylines, Cage Match will disappoint. There’s no Liu Kang. No Raiden. No tournament. No Shang Tsung. This is Johnny Cage’s solo adventure, and for some purists, that makes it feel like a spin-off rather than a true Mortal Kombat film.
