Alarmingly, research has also confirmed a link between urogenital schistosomiasis and an increased risk of HIV acquisition in women, as the genital lesions caused by the parasite create a biological pathway for the virus. Treating young girls for schistosomiasis could avert millions of new cases of HIV infection at a fraction of the cost of lifelong HIV therapy.
