This period coincided with the landmark "Mutzenbacher" decision by the Federal Constitutional Court, which redefined the legal standards for what constituted youth-endangering media. In 1996, the German Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons (BPjM) took action and placed "Jung & Frei" on the index of youth-endangering media. This official designation meant the magazine could no longer be made available to children and young people, effectively rendering its business model untenable.
