As public pressure mounted, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot removed Mahipal Maderna from the cabinet. Maderna was subsequently arrested by the CBI in December 2011 on charges of murder, abduction, and criminal conspiracy.

A second, successful attempt was made around July or August 2009 at Maderna's farmhouse in Jodhpur. This time, Bhanwari brought the cameraman, Rajesh Parihar, to adjust the camera to capture the entire scene correctly. The resulting footage was a 49-minute video. After Bhanwari went missing, her husband Amarchand filed a habeas corpus petition, alleging that she had been abducted at the behest of Mahipal Maderna.
